Silver Spring, Maryland, January 31, 2008 - Taking an unusual stance, the protest organizers are calling to public attention how the Discovery Channel fails to create a real sense of urgency around the crisis our planet is undergoing. James Lee, founder for the group, is asking all interested supporters to meet him in front of the Discovery Channel building for a civil protest. The Protest will be from 9am-9pm, February 15 to February 23, 2008 in Silver Spring, MD at the corner of Georgia and Wayne Ave in front of the corporate headquarters.
Organizers of the protest chose the Discovery Channel because the network, as stated by the founder and leader of the event, Lee; "They claim to be a concerned partner in championing environmental issues when in actual fact most of their programming is frivolous entertainment. The protest is aimed at calling attention to the hypocrisy that exists when the so-called environmental channel airs shows like “Cash Cab” and “Dirty Jobs”. These shows serve as diversions to keep the focus off what is really important, which is Global Warming, Habitat Destruction, and Animal Extinction. The channel deliberately shows ineffective programs to make it seem like something is being done when nothing is really happens. Their ineffectiveness is evident by the lack of results".
Lee asks “Are these ‘environmental’ shows actually working? Why is the news about the environment getting worse? Should it be getting better if they were doing their job? Should we be seeing that reflected on the nightly news? But no...The Discovery Channel is actually not about saving the planet, they are just another ‘green’ corporation whose real interests lies in money, products, junk and trash".
"The debate about the state of the planet is done. Global Warming is a reality. The massive extinction of animals is happening all over the world...Now let us begin the debate on how to save the planet. We can’t wait anymore, something must be done immediately", says Lee. Lee goes on to say, "do you believe that we need to hold the networks accountable and urge them to champion the real causes, every day with a consistent message? Do you believe that change is only possible when action is taken by the individual"?
The protest will be taking place at One Discovery Place, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910, just a short walking distance away from Silver Spring Red Line Metro Station. "Please come and make your voice be heard around the world saying you want solutions sought today and you want it broadcast on television continually" says Lee.
